Kitchen remodeling in Central Jersey
In its 2024 edition, Cost vs. Value priced a major midrange kitchen in Trenton at $81,3761, and its 2025 New York market, the metro Middlesex County is part of, came in at $90,2522. The local factor to plan around is gas: 79%3 of the county's occupied homes heat with utility gas, so most kitchens have a gas line, and changing fuel or moving the range turns a cabinet job into permit work.

Trenton's kitchen prices
Trenton is the only New Jersey market Cost vs. Value has priced recently, last in 2024. Its figures sit close to the national averages from the same edition.
| Measure | Trenton (2024) | U.S. average (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor midrange kitchen remodel, job cost | $28,0601 | $27,4924 |
| Major midrange kitchen remodel, job cost | $81,3761 | $79,9824 |
| Major upscale kitchen remodel, job cost | $170,1691 | $158,5304 |
Cost vs. Value's major midrange kitchen job updates an outdated 200-square-foot kitchen that keeps a functional layout, with 30 linear feet of semi-custom wood cabinets, a 3-by-5-foot island, laminate counters, a vented range hood, built-in microwave, dishwasher, disposal, custom lighting and new resilient flooring.5 A split-level kitchen is often near that size already.
The New York market's kitchens, 2025
The newer edition has no New Jersey city. Its New York market covers the metro that includes Middlesex County and prices kitchens higher than Trenton did.
| Measure | New York market (2025) | U.S. average (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor midrange kitchen remodel, job cost | $31,4192 | $28,4586 |
| Major midrange kitchen remodel, job cost | $90,2522 | $82,7936 |
| Major upscale kitchen remodel, job cost | $183,1722 | $164,1046 |
Treat the two markets as a range. Prices for Edison or New Brunswick tend to land between them, and the scope of your job will place it within that span.
Kitchens from the 1950s through the 1980s
Most Middlesex County homes were built in the postwar decades and the suburban growth that followed.
| Measure | Middlesex County | New Jersey |
|---|---|---|
| Homes built 1950–1969 | 30%7 | 27%7 |
| Homes built before 1980 | 57%7 | 63%7 |
Many of these kitchens were never opened to the rooms beside them. In a split-level, the wall between kitchen and dining room is often a bearing wall under the bedroom level, so a wider opening usually needs a beam and a full permit.
Detached houses and townhouses
About half the county's homes are detached houses, the same as statewide, and its share of townhouses is a little higher.
Which homes have gas
Census heating-fuel counts are the nearest public measure of gas service. Middlesex County is more gas-heated than New Jersey overall.
| Measure | Middlesex County | New Jersey |
|---|---|---|
| Occupied homes heated with utility gas | 79%3 | 73%3 |
| Occupied homes heated with electricity | 15%3 | 16%3 |
A gas range can be replaced on the same line without a permit, but moving it to an island or switching to induction can't. Induction usually needs a new heavy circuit, so ask about panel capacity early.
The trades a kitchen needs
Medians for the New York–Newark–Jersey City metro, since BLS publishes no wage table for the New Brunswick–Lakewood division.
| Measure | New York metro | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Carpenters, median hourly wage | $35.72/hr9 | $29.12/hr9 |
| Cabinetmakers and bench carpenters, median hourly wage | $28.96/hr9 | $22.44/hr9 |
| Plumbers, median hourly wage | $37.79/hr9 | $30.67/hr9 |
| Electricians, median hourly wage | $37.99/hr9 | $30.38/hr9 |
Licensed plumbing and electrical hours cost the most here, so keeping the sink under its window and the range on its wall holds the budget closer to Trenton's figures.
Hard water at the kitchen sink
Middlesex Water Company's 2025 results show a wide hardness range, depending on whether a home gets surface water, well water or a blend.
| Measure | Middlesex Water, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Water hardness, average | 157 mg/L10 |
| Water hardness, high end of range | 308 mg/L10 |
Hard water leaves film on glassware and scale in kettles and coffee makers. A dishwasher with a rinse-aid dispenser and a filter on the refrigerator line help, and a faucet with a matte finish hides spotting.
Permits
Your town's construction office issues kitchen permits under New Jersey's statewide code; Edison's office is one example. Cabinets, counters and flooring alone need no permit, nor does a like-for-like range or hood. A new gas line, moved sink or added circuits do, and if any part of the project goes beyond minor work, the whole job is reviewed as a full permit.
- Edison Township's Construction Code Enforcement Agency, headed by the construction official, deals with the public at one office, and altering a structure without first filing a written application with the construction official is unlawful.11
- Under New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code it is unlawful to renovate, alter, repair or enlarge a building without first applying to the construction official, or to the subcode official when only one trade is involved, and getting a permit.12
- In a one- or two-family home, new flooring of any kind, new cabinets, wallpaper or vinyl wall covering, and plaster or drywall covering less than 25 percent of the wall area all count as ordinary maintenance.12
- In a dwelling, a kitchen range hood can be replaced without a permit if the new one moves no more air than the old one or 400 cubic feet per minute and recirculates or vents on its own to the outdoors, and a stove or oven can be swapped if the fuel type, pipe size, location and electrical characteristics stay the same.12
- If any part of a project falls outside the minor work definition, the whole job needs a full permit application with all the usual inspections, including rough-in inspections before walls close.13
- New Jersey's code allows plumbing, electrical and HVAC work only by people licensed to do it, except a single-family homeowner working on his or her own home, and the licensed contractor's seal and signature go on the matching permit application.12

Before you hire
In New Jersey, ask for the company's home improvement contractor business registration number and confirm it's active with the Division of Consumer Affairs, because registering takes proof of at least $500,00024 per occurrence in liability insurance.

The split-level kitchen
In a split-level, the kitchen usually sits on the entry level beside the living and dining rooms, with bedrooms a half flight up and a family room a half flight down. That keeps it central, but it boxes the room in on three sides.
The EPA says a kitchen remodel may be a chance to seal electrical, plumbing and vent openings in walls that are opened, and that replacing cabinets can expose soffits that are otherwise hard to reach.14 In a split-level that often means the soffit over the wall cabinets, which can hide a duct or a pipe from the bathroom above.
For homes built before 1978, the EPA advises hiring contractors who use only lead-safe certified renovators.14 Middlesex Water says New Jersey law now requires water utilities to replace lead and galvanized steel service lines, and it plans to replace all of them in its system by 2031.10
Code points for a Central Jersey kitchen
These are national model code rules; your town's construction office applies New Jersey's edition of them. The 2021 International Residential Code says a kitchen range exhaust must discharge outdoors through its own airtight duct with a backdraft damper, never into an attic, crawl space or other indoor area; listed ductless hoods are the exception.15 Where a home has a fuel-burning appliance that is neither direct-vent nor mechanically vented, the 2021 International Residential Code requires makeup air for any exhaust system able to move more than 400 cubic feet per minute.16
The 2021 International Residential Code calls for at least two 20-ampere branch circuits for kitchen and dining-area receptacle outlets, and allows an outlet for a specific appliance to have its own circuit.17 The same code requires ground-fault (GFCI) protection on receptacles that serve kitchen countertop surfaces.18 When a home improvement contractor does the work, the contractor's registration number must appear on the permit application; an owner improving a home he or she owns doesn't need to register.12
Kitchens for aging in place
More than one in four adults 65 and older fall each year.19 The National Institute on Aging suggests keeping frequently used pots, pans and utensils where they are easy to reach, and preparing food while seated to prevent fatigue or loss of balance.20 Because a split-level kitchen shares a floor with the front door but not with the bedrooms, it helps to plan a seat at the counter and storage reachable without a step stool.
NAHB's Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) credential trains remodelers in home modifications for aging in place.21 In a ranch, where kitchen, bath and bedrooms share one floor, the kitchen is often the room that makes staying in the house practical.

Questions people ask
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Central Jersey?
Cost vs. Value's Trenton market priced a minor midrange kitchen at $28,0601 and a major midrange one at $81,3761 in 2024; the 2025 New York market listed $31,4192 and $90,2522. Gas, plumbing and wiring changes push a job toward the higher end.
Can I open my split-level kitchen to the dining room?
Often, but the wall between them may carry the bedroom level above. That's structural work, and in New Jersey it takes the project out of minor work. If any part of a project falls outside the minor work definition, the whole job needs a full permit application with all the usual inspections, including rough-in inspections before walls close.13
Does replacing the range hood need a permit?
Not if the new hood is no stronger than the old one and vents the same way. In a dwelling, a kitchen range hood can be replaced without a permit if the new one moves no more air than the old one or 400 cubic feet per minute and recirculates or vents on its own to the outdoors, and a stove or oven can be swapped if the fuel type, pipe size, location and electrical characteristics stay the same.12
